Uses the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (updated 2022). Your RMD is due December 31 each year โ€” miss it and the penalty can be up to 25% of what you should have withdrawn.

RMD essentials

Which accounts? Traditional, SEP, and SIMPLE IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s. Not Roth IRAs (for the original owner).
First RMD: You may delay your very first one to April 1 of the next year โ€” but then you take two in one year.
Still working? You may delay 401(k) RMDs from your current employer's plan until you retire.

Common questions

Can I withdraw more than the RMD?
Yes โ€” the RMD is a minimum. But extra withdrawals don't reduce next year's requirement.
What if my spouse is much younger?
If your spouse is the sole beneficiary and 10+ years younger, a different (Joint Life) table applies with lower RMDs.
Are RMDs taxed?
Yes, as ordinary income. A popular move: donate your RMD directly to charity (QCD) to avoid the tax, if you're charitably inclined.
